5K Feeling

This past Saturday I ran my first ever 5k. It was one of the most exciting days of my life. Let me tell you why.

We left my house at 5:30 a.m to drive the 25ish minutes to Daytona. After picking up our packets and getting all checked in we headed down to the starting line. In the middle of Pit Road. At Daytona International Speedway.

The sun had not even risen yet, and here I was, standing under the lights of one of the most famous auto raceways in the country, lined up where motorsports legends have lined up for years to "start their engines".

As soon as I plugged in my headphones and turned up my tunes it was time to go. Once my feet started moving all I could think about was my pace. Trying to concentrate on not fizzling out too quickly. Before I knew it, a mix of Rihanna and Lady Gaga had carried me through the first mile. I slowed once to a walking speed, but my feet wouldn't have it and I sped up. Thinking to myself "Just make it through this song" then "One more song". Just past mile 2 I passed by some more members of our group who were doing the walking track. Shortly after that was mile 3 and the final turn.

The adrenaline I felt at that moment was incredible. I pulled out all the stops as soon as I could see the finish line. It wasn't long before the rest of our group crossed the finish line from the walking track. What an incredible feeling!

After a celebratory Denny's breakfast, a shower, and a quick nap we headed back to the track for the Rolex 24 hour race which we got into for free with our registration...and where after patient waiting, we caught a glimpse McDreamy himself, the one and only Patrick Dempsey, getting into his car!

Needless to say I slept like the dead that night. I am on the hunt now and gearing up for the next race!

Rach and I, excited and exhausted (in front of McDreamy's garage...)

Outfit of the Morning!

Today I woke up bright-eyed and bushy-tailed about an hour and a half before my alarm went off for church. What a perfect time for an outfit of the day!
This is one of my favorite dresses. It's from JC Penney, and came with the belt.
My necklace is also from JC Penney. It's not very visible in the picture but is gold, silver and copper rings.
My sweater and shoes are both from Target.

I forgot to wear my bag in the photo, but took a picture of it separately anyway. I got it at a little boutique in downtown St. Augustine. Don't mind the messy table in the background. :)

I am hoping to do some more outfit of the day videos in the future. And to get better shots of the outfits and accessories!

Totally Tie-Dye

I am geeky and get excited by finding new and exciting places in my town. Yesterday I was introduced to a little art studio that was tucked away behind a strip mall and a car dealership, and let me tell you, this place is a hidden treasure!

A friend of mine told me about this place recently and mentioned that they were having a "Tie-Dye Day", so after church my roommate, friend, and her daughter went to check it out. There was one room blocked off for tie-dye, but the main part of the building was full of pottery to paint, glass pieces for mosaics, and a jewelry station! I am still kicking myself for not having my camera with me--what kind of blogger am I?!
Sideways view. It says "I got creative at art & soul"
Each shirt was about $10. All they had available were t-shirts with the studio logo, but we suggested that they look into tank tops, socks, etc. ;) Once we bought our shirts we took them back into the dying room. First we had to soak them in soda ash. We were told that this changed the pH of the dye and helped it make a permanent connection to the fibers in the shirt. We did that for about 5 minutes.

Then we put a clothespin on the spot where we wanted the spiral to begin (mine is right over my heart) and twisted until the whole shirt rolled up. Then we put rubber bands around the shirt so it looked like a sliced pizza.

Actually applying color was the fun (messy) part. I had in my mind only to use a couple of colors, but I couldn't help but love them all! I applied them very randomly to each section on both sides. We wrapped our shirts tightly in plastic wrap and put them in Ziploc freezer bags to keep overnight.

I threw mine in the tub under cold water this morning until it ran mostly clear. Then I put it in the washing machine on a cold spin cycle before running it with soap. I am very pleased with how it turned out and can't wait to go back and try out some of the other things they have at the studio!

Saturday Smoothie Success

This past weekend I enjoyed a relaxing weekend off. After a long and crazy week of teaching, this three day weekend was just what I needed.

When Friday afternoon rolled around, I decided to get my grocery shopping out of the way. I picked up something for dinner, stopped at the Red Box, and prepared myself for a night of pajamas, a bottle of moscato, and my couch.

Waking relaxed and refreshed Saturday morning I decided to wash and cut up the fruit I bought the night before. I find that doing this makes me more likely to choose it for a snack since it is right at the front of the refrigerator, easily accessible and ready to eat. While I was cutting up some pineapple I thought it would be pretty tasty in a smoothie.

In the blender
After finding, assembling, and figuring out the blender I tossed in some pineapple chunks, some cut up mango, a whole small banana, and some ice. I topped that with some orange juice and away we went! It was fantastic, easy and definitely something I will try again in the future. It is great fuel for the day, an awesome easy way to get a good serving of fruit (or veggies..), and the combinations are endless!

Deliciousness!

Blanket Blabber

For a wedding gift, I am crocheting Justin a blanket using our wedding colors (or as close as I could get). It has come a long way, but it's a good thing I still have a little time to finish it. ;) Here is a picture of where I am so far:
The stitch I am using is called basket weaving. I found this stitch here (this blog has great tutorials and may explain better than I can!). I put my own spin on it by using the checker pattern, and by making each square individually. Here is a picture of a finished square:

Begin with a chain. Your chain should be a multiple of 6 plus one chain. (Each of my squares are 36 + 1 = 37)
Row 1:
Double Crochet in the third stitch from hook, and every stitch to the end.
Ch. 2, turn.
Row 2:
Front Post Double Crochet (Yarn over. Insert hook between first and second posts from the front, and bring it back through between the second and third. Yarn over, draw hook back through. Complete double crochet).
Repeat in next two stitches.
Back Post Double Crochet (Yarn over. Insert hook from back to front in next stitch. Complete double crochet).
Repeat in next two stitches .
Continue your pattern of three from the front, three from the back until the end of the row.
Complete one DC in the extra stitch you made.
Row 3:
Same as row 2
Rows 4 & 5:
Begin these two rows by inserting hook from the back (In rows 2-3 you inserted your hook from the front first. This will create the weaved look)

I will be sure to share when the whole blanket is finished, and perhaps updates along the way. Happy stitching!

Pair of Purple Polishes

After a vigorous apartment cleaning, an hour of lesson planning, cooking and cleaning up supper, and (hold your applause) a gym session I am finished. Accompanied by season one of Will & Grace and a cup of hot cider I planted myself on the couch for a well-needed manicure.

I love glitter. Especially on my nails. I started with two coats of Wet N' Wild Wild Shine in "Wild Card"--a nice shiny purple--to have as a base.
"Wild Card" by Wet N' Wild

                                                                                      "Frenzy" by Sinful Colors
The Finished Product!
I applied a pretty heavy coat of "Frenzy" once "Wild Card" had dried. A lot of glitter nail polishes don't have as much glitter or give as much coverage as I would like. "Frenzy" is packed full of tiny green and purple glitter which paired very well with the purple underneath. I'm really pleased with how it turned out. A winning combination of color!!
