Thrifty Weekend

Today is the first Saturday since before we got married that J and I haven't had somewhere to be or something to do, so we decided to go check out the farmer's market! We scored some sweet corn, green beans, pumpkin bread, and strawberry/rhubarb jam (my favorite!!)

Apparently today is the day for garage and sidewalk sales. We passed so many on our way to the market we had to stop at a few on the way back. Here is our prize purchase.
Before this we had all of our spices in a tub in the cabinet on the left. On a shelf that I couldn't reach (I am not short-I am vertically challenged). We found this gem for $1 and couldn't pass it up.

We also came away with a wooden serving tray (so J can bring me breakfast in bed! Right...) and...
Just kidding. We didn't buy an organ. But I really wanted to! Our neighbors probably wouldn't have been so happy.

Anyhow, now J is watching a video on how to brew his own beer. Thanks, groomsmen for that gift. Wahoo. Tell me what you're up to this weekend!

7 Things

Louise at Sprinkle of Glitter is one of my favorite bloggers, and this post is inspired by her "7 Things in 7 Days" project, which is a list of seven attainable goals in a realistic time frame (usually spanning the month).

I love this idea. Having these small goals is a good way to stay motivated while thinking about working toward larger goals! Here's my list:

Explore: We finally have our cozy little home all set up. I want to see all of the cool local color that this new town has to offer!

Capture: While I'm doing all of this exploring, why not take pictures to document? I still haven't taken a single picture of our apartment either. Oy.

Read: I've seen this one pop up in quite a few of the lists I've read and here I go following suit. J is an English teacher. Our apartment is teeming with shelves and boxes of books. What is my excuse? I started Kite Runner last night.

Pray: I am a worry wart to the extreme. I worry about things that are past and gone, things I can't change, and things that are completely irrational. "Cast all your anxiety on Him, for He cares for you" -1 Peter 5:7. Why is it so hard to remember this?

Walk: Exercise is another one of the goals I've seen the most. We live in a really nice area with lots of places to walk to; parks, grocery stores, restaurants. I'd like to walk more.

Sleep: This summer has been crazy, and I've been keeping some really strange hours. The last few nights I've been up past 2 a.m. It's so important to get the right amount of sleep, especially when I start working so I want to get on a good schedule.
Healthify: Yes, I just made up that word. What of it? J has been doing most of the grocery shopping. Soda, beer, chicken wings, etc. I love that I've been learning and taking over some of the cooking but I'd like to transition us to a healthier household.

That's my list! What's on yours?

Puffy Hat

I know, I know, it's the middle of summer. A ridiculously hot summer. But how cute is this hat?
Now that we're settled in our place and J has started work I've gone a little project crazy. All I was trying to do was go through my yarn stash, and a few hours later this hat was born!
I used a Bernat yarn, "Faded Khaki" from the denimstyle collection, a 5mm crochet hook, and an awesome youtube tutorial (here)!

I deviated from the pattern by adding a couple more rows to make it longer, and kind of did my own thing on the band.

I am by no means a crochet expert and am not ashamed that this took me hours. I ripped it apart and started over as many times as I hit "replay" and re-watched that video, but here it is and I am proud!

DIY: Eyeshadow Primer

You know those things you can't get by without but you just don't like spending money on; like gas and tampons? I think eyeshadow primer is one of those things. For such a little bottle it can get pretty pricy, but your shadow won't last 'til lunch without it.

All you need for long-lasting shadow are two things you probably already have in your makeup bag: lotion/cream and a liquid foundation or concealer.
I used Equate eye cream and a little bit of my True Match concealer (I included the foundation in the picture as another option)
Of course, you will need some place to mix the products. I just took the lid off the cream and scooped a little bit of cream into it. Since I used concealer I used my brush as a mixer, but if you use foundation you can use your finger or a q-tip!

Mix the products to your liking, and voila! Your makeup will last plus your eyes will be nice and soft, and smooth!

New Look

Huzzah for a blog makeover!

I opened my blog for a little sprucing up. Here we are several hours, google pages, and test runs later with a brand new overhauled StephaNews!

Being the perfectionist that I am, it will probably still undergo some tweaking but I'm proud! How do you like the new look?

Weekend Wrap-Up

To give you a break from my kitchen adventures, I thought I'd give you a peek at how I spent my weekend!
Sar and I :)

The man: Ryan Braun

Sausage Races!!

J's mom got us Brewers tickets so my friend Sarah and J's brother came along to the game! We had great seats and a great time (even though they lost...)! I'd love to hear what you did this weekend!!

Kickin' Chicken Wontons

Alright, friends. After last nights kitchen disappointment it was back to the drawing board this evening. I found this gem on Pinterest a few days ago and had to try it.

Buffalo Chicken Wontons for the win. These were fairly easy and quick (aside from cooking the chicken) to make, and both J and I loved them!

Unlike the french onion fiasco I will definitely make these again. I see them being an awesome party appetizer! I'm already brainstorming what other tasty goodness I can stuff inside a wonton wrapper!

Married, Moved, and Mastering the Kitchen

Well, here I am, sitting down and finally catching up on blog and youtube subscriptions! Let me (try to) make a long story short:

Since my last blog, J flew down to Florida and together we moved all of my stuff back home. He stayed at my house until (dun dun DUN) our wedding! His family and many of our friends came in to town to celebrate with us. The day was perfect (I will do a separate post on the day)! The next day we had a quick brunch/gift opening with our parents and then jetted off on our honeymoon (I will mention that in the wedding post too). After our honeymoon we made the trip back to his parents' house for a second reception with friends who couldn't make the wedding. Two days after this we began the moving process to our new place, and since then we've been moving and getting settled!

As I hinted in the title I've been trying my hand in the kitchen. Let me show you what we tried tonight!
These are french onion soup grilled cheese sandwiches (recipe here)! I really don't like onions much. But I do love Swiss cheese and French bread and J loves french onion soup so we gave these a try. After chopping the onions and waiting for eternity for them to cook down, I don't think they were worth all of the effort and probably will not make them again.

Look for a wedding/honeymoon post coming soon! Also expect more kitchen endeavors. Next up: Buffalo chicken won tons!!
