Year In Review 2012

What did you do in 2012 that you'd never done before?
This list could get kind of extensive.
  • I lived in my first apartment.
  • Taught in my own classroom.
  • Swam in the ocean.
  • Ran a 5k.
  • Drove a convertible.
  • Got married. And (forgive my candidness) enjoyed the full benefits of being married.
Lots of first experiences for me this year!

Did you keep your new years’ resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't make resolutions. At least not the "I'm going to join the gym this year" or "I'm going to cut caffeine this year" type. I like setting more short-term, realistic goals that I can actually achieve. So I guess the short answer to this question is no. ;)

Did anyone close to you give birth?
No. But a bunch of people I know are pregnant. Ask me this again next year at this time and I will have a lot to tell you!

Did anyone close to you die?
Yes. My neighbor that I grew up with across the street from my parents' house was killed in a car accident a few months ago.
What countries did you visit?
Unfortunately I didn't leave the country. Anyone want to fund a trip for J and I??
What would you like to have in 2013 that you lacked in 2012?
More time with my family. I only got to see my family for short holiday visits because I lived so far away. I was also splitting up my time between them and J.
What date from 2012 will remain etched upon your memory?
June 16, 2012. My wedding day. :)
What was your biggest achievement of the year?
This was my first year teaching. It had plenty of ups and downs but I'm really proud of all the things I have learned and having made it through.
What was your biggest failure?
The "Newlywed Nine" is not a myth. After J and I got married I pretty much gave up on exercising and eating healthy. I lost a good amount of the progress I made in Florida. :-\
Did you suffer illness or injury?
Nothing out of the ordinary. One unfortunate weekend of double pink-eye and a few colds, but I am thankful for my good health.

What was the best thing you bought?
My iPad. J had to talk me into buying it, but now that I have it I'm so glad I do.
Whose behavior merited celebration?
Ummm...I don't know.
Where did most of your money go?
Being an adult. The wedding, rent, car repair, bills.

What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Getting married! I'm still pretty excited about it. :)
What song will always remind you of 2012?
Well, the song 2012 by Jay Sean.
It wasn't released in 2012, but how could I associate it with another year?
Compared to this time last year, are you:
Happier or sadder? Happier.
Thinner or fatter? About the same. Maybe a little heavier.
Richer or poorer? Poorer.
What do you wish you’d done more of?
I really wish I had taken more pictures. I also wish I would have run more so I could still do it :p
What do you wish you’d done less of?
Complaining. I focused on a lot of negatives instead of enjoying the positives.
How will you be spending Christmas?
Well, the Saturday before Christmas we had a Christmas celebration with J's family before we drove to my house. Christmas eve we were with my mom's family at my grandma's house and Christmas day we were at my house with my dad's family.
Did you fall in love in 2012?
I am in love, obviously. But that started a while before 2012. :)
How many one-night stands?
None.
What thing did you do that was meaningful to others?
Umm...I'm not sure.
What were your favorite TV programs?
Big Bang Theory and How I Met Your Mother. And of course Hart of Dixie, Teen Mom and Honey Boo  Boo!!

Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
I wouldn't say that I hate anyone. There are a few people I have lost a good bit of respect for though.
What was the best book you read in 2012?
I won't lie. I didn't read a whole lot of books. Probably the Hunger Games series though.
What was your greatest musical discovery?
Oh man! The Lumineers. I can't get enough of this song.

What did you want and get?
I wanted to see my family. I'm closer to my family geographically than I have been in years and we live very close to J's family. I really enjoy being able to see them more.
What did you want but did NOT get?
I wanted a smart phone. I went on J's plan when we got married and am locked into a contract; I'm realizing I don't really need one.
What was your favorite film of this year?
When I lived in Florida we went to the movies a lot; I really liked the Hunger Games and The Amazing Spiderman. I'm positive if I had seen Les Mis while it was still 2012 it would have been my favorite.
What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 23. It was the day after my wedding. I opened some gifts with my family (and my new family), drove a few hours into our honeymoon and spent the night in a beautiful hotel suite on Lake Michigan with my new husband. :)
What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Being closer to my family and friends. Everyone I am close with is spread out all over the country. And that sucks.
What kept you sane?
God, without a doubt. I relied a lot on prayer this past year.
Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
This is a pretty recent one. And it's pretty freakin' weird. But probably Nev Schulman from the Catfish documentary/tv show. I just think he seems like an awesome guy.
What political issue stirred you the most?
I don't want to get into politics.
Who did you miss?
My parents.
Who was the best new person you met this year?
So many people in Florida. I made some really great friends there and met some really awesome people.
Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2012.
Favorite quote from that book!

That's a pretty good summary of my year. Thanks Jenna for the questions!! Tonight we're going to a friends' house to bring in the new year and hopefully skype with a friend who is spending the year in China! What are your plans tonight?

It's OK

It's been a while since I've linked up for It's Ok  I cou, but I'm back.

Its Ok Thursdays

Today I've decided that It's ok....
  •  that we're under a blizzard warning.
  • that because J has a snow day and I don't, he's driving me to work.
  • that I still have Christmas shopping to do.
  • that I've hardly listened to any Christmas music at all...
  • and really can't believe there are only five days until Christmas.
  • to kind of enjoy writing a blog using bullet points.
  • that I couldn't fall asleep last night and I couldn't stay asleep this morning...wait. That's definitely not ok.
I hope you're all having a wonderful Thursday.

Weekend and Weaknesses

Number 14 out of my 30 things is to list five weaknesses.

Worrying.
Sometimes I worry about stupid things that could and would never happen. Occasionally a worry will pop into my brain and it will consume me until I see for myself everything is fine.
I am indecisive.
I hate making decisions, especially in a group. I never want to be the one to pick because I never want anyone to be disappointed.

Shyness.
I am very shy and awkward around people. I think this is why I enjoy blogging; typing is easier for me than actually talking sometimes.

Procrastination.
I'm pretty bad at putting things off until the last minute. Like the rest of my Christmas shopping. Seriously.

I care way too much what other people think.
Why? I don't know. I try to pretend I don't care. I am working on this.

Now that that's out of the way here's what happened this weekend.
Lots of crocheting, obviously. I started making these squares when I was student teaching like two years ago. I cranked out a whole bunch of them this weekend and am putting them together into a blanket for my mom.

And then of course, this beard hat happened. This is probably my favorite thing that I've ever made. Justin is also clearly thrilled about it. I stopped tonight and picked up some yarn and as soon as I hit publish I will be starting another. Our Christmas tree looks crooked in the background. I promise it's just my awesome photography skills.

What else happened? We had a friendsgiving party. Some friends of ours are engaged and he lives about an hour away from us so whenever she comes to visit him we try to get together. Since we all love to cook and eat, and drink, we decided to throw ourselves a friendsgiving feast. It was a night full of turkey, whipped cream vodka, and Settlers of Catan.

Earlier this week I also jumped on the instagram bandwagon. You should can find me here.

A (Picture) Day in the Life

Today's 30 thing is to describe a day in my life so I thought I'd share a few Tuesday snapshots.

I usually wake up between 6:15-6:20, but I didn't suppose you wanted to see a picture of my alarm clock. My dear husband is kind of a shower hog, so after my alarm goes off I can count on laying in bed a few extra minutes waiting to get into the bathroom. After I shower I usually enjoy a few moments of Boy Meets World. What a great way to kick off the day!
Breakfast usually consists of Cheerios, or peanut butter toast. This particular day it was a leftover piece of cake. In my shame, I forgot to photograph it. Then I brush my teeth.
And get ready for the day. These are some of the products I use regularly.
Diet Coke; the nectar of life. This is how I get through most days.
When I play for church on the weekends, I spend a few nights a week practicing.
When I lived in Florida, my friend Lisa and I would make dinner together and watch Hart of Dixie on Tuesday nights. Now that I'm here, we watch it over skype. :)
I finished off tonight with a cup of Sleepytime tea. Not only delicious, but knocks me right out. Bedtime is usually by 10. Really exciting, I know.
There you have it! That's what my Tuesday looked like. Since I'm nosy and think it's super interesting seeing how other people spend their days, I'd love to see a day in your life!

Pet Peeves

Today's thirty things is comin atcha pet peeve style.

1. This.
Are the five extra steps to the cart corral going to inconvenience you that much?

2. Making a complete stop before a right turn in traffic.
Unless there's a big red sign or light, you don't have to stop

3. People who don't cover their mouth when sneezing or coughing.
I don't want to wear your phlegm. Kthanks.

 4. Bad grammar.
Including, but not limited to: double negatives, "I seen...",  and the classic your/you're conundrum.

5. Leaving things on.
Our keurig turns off automatically which J takes as license to leave it on. If you're done using it, shut it off!! Before I leave my house I walk through every room to make sure everything is turned off. Stop judging.

6. Bluetooth phone headsets.
When you are walking through a public place talking to yourself at the top of your lungs, you kind of look like a big ol' douche.
7. Being late.
I usually start getting ready and leave ridiculously early. It drives me nuts when I am going somewhere with someone else and they lollygag around and make us late. Even though to me, late means any less than 10 minutes early.

8.People chewing with their mouths open.
Gross.

9. The sound of silverware scraping on a plate.
Seriously makes me cringe.

 10. Everything about public restrooms. Or dirty bathrooms in general.
Pee on the seat/floor, unflushed toilets, empty toilet paper and paper towel rolls, wet counters...

To avoid sounding like an old grouch listing things about the human race that annoy me, let me tell you about my pleasant Saturday afternoon! For the first time in weeks neither of us had anything to do or anywhere to be. So we spent the day cleaning. And yes, I do consider that to be pleasant (see #10). We went to the band concert at the school where J teaches this evening and picked up Chinese takeout on the way home. Now we're watching The Fast and the Furious and J is baking a cake. This guy is the greatest.

I'd love to hear some of your pet peeves (it might make me feel a little less crazy)!

Because I'm Cool Like That...

Today's thirty things task is to tell you my most embarrassing moment.
Remember senior class polls in high school? I won easiest to embarrass. By a landslide. I'm not even sure there were other contenders. I also won best hair. But that has nothing to do with this. I'm very fair-skinned and when I'm embarrassed or nervous, you know it. Some people get rosy cheeks, some get sweaty palms. I turn into a freaking tomato. My ears get red, and sometimes even my neck. Want an embarrassing moment aside from sharing this photo? Here goes:

I love road trips. When I was in college road trips were a big deal; it was a 12 hour drive from school to my home. Thankfully I knew a lot of people who were heading to the same area so we always loaded up our cars and carpooled.

One Easter break I happened upon the opportunity to ride with a guy that I thought was the coolest. I'm a little bit afraid of driving. I don't like highway driving, and I really don't like driving cars that aren't mine.

With two other people in the car I figured it wouldn't be so bad. When it came to my turn to drive, we stopped for gas and to grab dinner. I hopped into the driver's seat and was navigating my way out of the McD's parking lot when one of the other lady passengers said "I don't think we're supposed to be here". Of course we weren't. We were going the wrong way into the drive-thru.

As if that debacle wasn't enough, we stopped at the gas station next. Please keep in mind that we're only about 5 hours into the trip and fresh off of the drive-thru scenario. Someone got out and pumped gas, someone went in to pay, everyone took a potty break, blah blah blah. Ready to get back on the road, I could not get the car into drive. After a few painful minutes of trying I said "I give up. I can't get the shifter to move".  To which our vehicle owner says "...because you have to turn the car on first".

I hope you enjoyed my slice of embarrassment. Perhaps it was coincidence, but I did not have to do any driving on the trip back to school. And that was ok with me.

Sunday Social

Oh geez, guys. I'm so behind. I have so many posts to write and so many things floating around in my brain that I wanted to share with you. I feel like such a dirtball when I don't blog for so long. Because I start coming up with lame lists of excuses. The most recent being: this is the first time in over two weeks that I've been able to use my computer...my technology whiz of a husband took it all apart this weekend and hopefully fixed the problem. So let's Sunday Social it up, shall we?
Sunday Social
1. What is your favorite holiday tradition? When my cousins and I were young my grandma always used to buy a birthday cake with "Happy Birthday Jesus" written on it. We haven't done that in a while, but I always thought it was cool. Otherwise, we always just go to church, have dinner, and open presents with my family. This year I'm looking forward to spending the holiday with J and developing some of our own traditions.

2. Do you have a certain holiday movie you watch more than others?  A Christmas Story. I also really like Elf and the Jim Carrey version of The Grinch. But A Christmas Story is my favorite and I watch it almost every year.

3. Show us your favorite decoration or pinterest decoration you wish you could have:

Well, this is our tree. I can't for the life of me get this picture to upload the right way so please, turn your head and direct your attention to the angel at the top. It is my favorite decoration. :)

4. What is your favorite holiday song? If you know me, you know that I have a really hard time picking a "favorite" anything. I'm very indecisive. But I enjoy Oh Holy Night, Silent Night, and the instrumental version of Sleigh Ride.

5. What is your favorite holiday dessert? Peanut butter blossoms (recipe). I don't know if these are an official "holiday" dessert, but my grandma always makes them at Christmas and I love them.

6. What is on your wishlist? Isn't it funny how all year long you think you think of things you need or want until someone asks you? Then you draw a blank. Honestly, I could really use some new clothes. Winter clothes to be specific. And shoes.

That's all for Sunday Social this week! Hopefully I will be back to blogging more regularly now that my computer is running. But for now there is a pile of school work on the table that won't go away so I guess I'd better go do it. I hope you enjoyed your weekend!
