Dear Everybody...

Dear Jethro, I'm sorry we made chicken last night and did not share it with you. But really, thank you for tipping over the garbage can over night so I could wake up to garbage and chicken bones strewn about the kitchen and dining room. Jerk. Later update: I found a chicken bone in the bathroom. Why are you eating chicken in the bathroom? Gross.
A poor quality image of the face of guilt and shame.

Dear co-workers, Thank you for providing me with a multitude of delicious treats from the cookie exchange! I will try to share them with Justin. And not eat them all in one sitting.

Dear ABC Family, Thank you for making such wonderfully awful Christmas movies so I could spend my Saturday lazing about.

Dear Week-Before-Christmas, I know you're going to be crazy but please go quickly. Just not so quickly that I can't get everything done that needs to get done. Thanks.

Dear Laundry, I am so sick of you. You are always in the way, and never done. I know I should take more care of you. I'll try to do better. But seriously I hate you. With a fiery burning passion.

Dear Weekend, Thank you for being so good to me. You were the perfect mixture of relaxing and busy and productive. I spent you baking cookies, making yummy food, getting some cleaning done, exchanging cookies, celebrating a relative's birthday, and enjoying some holiday movies.

What did you do this weekend? I hope it was great.

Late to the Linkup

Here I am, coming late to the party. But partying nonetheless.
The Vintage Modern Wife & Brunch with Amber: Happies and Crappies Link Up
Crappies
-I forgot to write and schedule this post ahead of time, thus the late arrival.

-We could not go outside 4 out of 5 days this week because of the wind chill. A room full of two year olds who have been cooped up all day is not fun.

-I've been having crazy messed up dreams this week. Like...dreams that wake me up in the middle of the night and haunt my thoughts all day long.

-I've procrastinated baking for the cookie exchange as long as I possibly could, now I have to stay up tonight and make them. :-\

Happies
-Vodka tonic. Delicious, satisfying, and makes me feel a little bit classy....as I sip it out of a plastic flower cup in my sweat pants on the couch.

-We got to go outside today, finally. I never thought I would be so excited to go stand in the snow.

-All of my students were gone by 4 today. Which means I was gone by 4:15!

-Last night I went to bed at 8:30. Now, I didn't fall asleep until closer to 9:30, but the fact that I was able to be in my jammies and in laying in bed with my book was glorious. Yeah...I'm super exciting.

-Cookie exchange! Even though I'm a little miffed that I put off baking so long, I'm really excited to go hang out with friends tomorrow! And eat cookies. I'm making these peanut butter blossoms. YUM!

What is your favorite holiday cookie??

Violet VoxBox

This week I got my Violet VoxBox from Influenster. If you're not familiar with influenster, check them out here. This has been my favorite box so far. Here's what I got:
My ipad camera doesn't exactly do this color justice...there are a lot of beautiful blues and greens in it!
This is Sally Hansen Triple Shine in Fanta-sea. It's a very fine glitter with hints of silver, green, and aqua/blue. When I first used this, I was kind of disappointed. It was very sheer and took 2-3 coats to reach an opacity that was just so-so. It also took forever to dry and smudged really easily. In just a day or so it was all smudged and peeled off. Today I put it on over top of Essie Mind Your Mittens. I was happy with just one coat, and since I didn't have to pile it on, it dried quicker and hasn't smudged. Using a base coat underneath really makes the colors pop. The application was pretty smooth and comes with a flat, rounded tip brush. I would consider trying some of the non-glitter polishes in this line.

This Goody QuikStyle brush looks pretty bizarre. Those little blue fuzzy things in between the bristles are microfiber bristles to help soak up the extra water after you wash your hair. It's kind of weird, but it does work. I have been using his right after I get out of the shower and it cuts down the time it takes for my hair to air dry. The brush is really light which makes it easy to use, and is also very gentle on the hair and scalp. I haven't been able to get the microfiber bristles to stand back up as well as they originally did but they seem to dry back out pretty well. Even though I probably wouldn't have gravitated toward this product had I just seen it in the store, I really like it!

Well hello, cheesy selfie and giant forehead. This is another product from Goody...the Athletique Adjustable Yoga Wicking headband. I tend not to wear a lot of headbands, especially when working out because they always slip and slide right off of my head. I have only worn this around the house but I haven't had one problem with it falling off! There is a Velcro strip on the back that allows the band to adjust and fit perfectly! The material is nice and snug so it doesn't get all stretched out, and it's very comfortable. I absolutely recommend this headband!

Have you tried any of these products? Let me know what you think!

The Things You Hear at Daycare.

When you work in childcare, there is no telling what you might hear on a daily basis. Sometimes you want to cry, sometimes you want to laugh, and sometimes you just blog about it. Here are some of my favorites:

One afternoon a student was in the bathroom. I heard some loud, thundering flatulence. While I'm trying to hold in my laughter, the child says "Dephanie! I got a thousand poops!" ...and a thousand poops it was..
source

This discussion happened at lunch time. They were talking about babies. "One time I turned into a baby like myself. Then my mom put me in her belly, and that's when I was born".

The girls really like to play house. And be in charge. This happened on the playground one day. "My name is going to be 'Mommy' and your name is going to be 'Sweetie'. Now let's go".

We were making bead bracelets one afternoon. I picked up some string and said I wanted to make one too. With a very advanced sarcastic tone, a child replied "Oh yeah. That'd be cute".

Coloring is always a big hit. When I asked what this child to tell me about the picture, he said "It's a snake. He's crawling in the grass. Sometimes I pee in the grass".

Child is sitting on the potty for a few minutes when he says "I thought I had to poop, but I guess I only have farts".

I feel like there might be more of these posts in the future.

Happies, Crappies, and Procrastination

Hi, folks. Instead of taking care of the mountain of housework I have to do, I just finished scarfing down a bowl of delicious pasta, am enjoying just one episode of The Office, and writing this post (it's Thursday night so I'm a little ahead of the game). Let's get to it.

The Vintage Modern Wife & Brunch with Amber: Happies and Crappies Link Up

Crappies:
-My freaking car. Thankfully the shop called today and it's done, but I'm not looking forward to the bill.

-Did I mention the mountain of housework I have to do? There are three baskets of laundry surrounding me right now that need to be folded and put away and the dishes are taking over my kitchen.

-It's freaking cold outside. I love the holidays but I don't love cold weather. Especially when I have to get my kiddos bundled up and take them outside in it.

Happies:
-Some friends from out of town...or rather a friend from out of town and his fiancee, whom I have not met yet...are coming to stay with us this weekend and I can't wait!!

-We're having Friendsgiving on Saturday night. Good friends, good food, good times!!

-I got myself a Christmas present online on Black Friday and it arrived yesterday. A beautiful pair of black boots, and two Essie nail polishes. Thanks, Macy's gift card!

I hope your weekend has lots of happy and no crappy!

Some Stuff

Hey. Hi. Hello. Let's catch up.

Since I'm not interested in actually writing recap posts, and it's a week after Thanksgiving, I'll just give you the short version: Baked pies. Played organ. Ate too much. Detroit beat GB. Black Friday shopped. Napped. Decorated. Saw Catching Fire. Brother-in-law's birthday.
Funny Thanksgiving Ecard: Make sure the clothes you buy on Black Friday take into account how fat you got on Thanksgiving.
source

Today my car broke down. I did not handle it with grace and poise, instead I worked myself into frustration and tears and let it ruin my afternoon. Thanks, car.

My hands look like I lost a fist fight with a brick wall. It happens every winter and I haven't found anything that really helps. But my nails look great...albeit short...thanks to Essie Mind Your Mittens. Bad blogger...no picture.

I ordered a pair of boots online on Black Friday. They arrived today and they are gorgeous. I haven't tried them on yet though because of my post-car angst.

We're almost finished with The Office. I didn't realize how much I had missed. I'm trying to put off watching the last few because of the sad empty feeling that comes when a show ends. :-\
source
Last Saturday night we went down to my in-law's house to celebrate my youngest brother-in-law's birthday. Somewhere in the midst of pizza, old fashioneds, and chocolate cake, the home videos came out. It was adorable, hilarious, and one of the best nights of my life. Baby Justin was pretty cute!!

I'm sick of "Gift Guide" posts and articles. I understand some people are hard to buy for. But I would assume if you're buying a gift for someone, you should know a few things about them. So I don't really think a complete stranger can successfully help you pick out a gift. And finally, I've seen a "gift guide" for every freaking kind of person. Man. Woman. Fashionista. Mom. Just stop.

We're hosting Friendsgiving this weekend! Tonight is going to be a whirlwind of cleaning and prepping, and one more day of work to get through tomorrow before out of town friends get here!
What are you up to this weekend??

Here Comes the Sun!

The lovely Brittany has nominated me for a Sunshine award!!

These are the rules:
-Put the logo in a post or on your blog.
-Answer the questions written by the person who nominated you.
-Nominate others (include their links in your post).
-Provide questions for your nominees to answer.

Questions from Brittany
1. What song do you never get tired of listening to? I don't do well at picking  just one in these types of situations. So my two are "Beautiful Day" by U2 and "Breathe In, Breathe Out" by Mat Kearney.

2. What is your favorite holiday tradition? We don't do this any more since there aren't any young kids in my family anymore, but my grandma always used to order a cake for Christmas Eve and have them write "Happy birthday, Jesus" on it. I'd like to start that tradition up again when we have kids.

3. Biggest pet peeve?  When people crack their knuckles, neck, jaw, etc. This makes me so upset. Can't even explain why. Just makes me cringe.

4. Facebook or Twitter? As much crap as it gets these days, I have to say Facebook. I like Twitter but I use Facebook more. Mainly for keeping in touch with long distance friends and family.

5. What is your favorite blog? I can't pick a favorite blog.

6. Describe your ideal vacation? Ireland. It is my dream to go there one day.

7. Who is your celebrity crush? Bono. Don't judge me.

8. What is your favorite thing about fall? Scarves.

9. Who do you go to when you need advice? I guess it depends on what kind of advice. Usually Justin first, or my mom.

10. Give us a random fact about yourself. I have extremely flat feet.

My Questions
1. If you could go back and live in any time period, which would you choose?
2. What is your biggest fear?
3. When you were young, what did you want to be when you grew up...and is that the job you have now?
4. Name one item on your bucket list.
5. Bath or shower?
6. Choose any 3 people, dead or alive, that you would like to have dinner with.
7. Are you allergic to anything?
8. What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?
9. Favorite tv show?
10. What is one talent you wish you had?

I nominate

It's Beginning to Look A Lot Like...

...I won't say it. I know there are a lot of people out there (my husband included) who get all crabby when I start getting excited about Christmas before Thanksgiving.

Anyway, I woke up to a lovely layer of snow on the ground this morning, and I'm sitting here with my cereal watching more little flakes fall from the sky. Before this post becomes all about snow, let's get to Happies and Crappies, shall we?

The Vintage Modern Wife & Brunch with Amber: Happies and Crappies Link Up

Crappies:
-We don't have a garage...so not only is there snow on the ground, it's also on my car. Hooray for brushing and scraping....

-I woke up super early this morning. This should probably be a happy, but I could not go back to sleep for the life of me.

Happies:
-HALF-DAY FRIDAY!!! This has happened the last two weeks in a row, and it is wonderful. The rest of the week drags on pretty slowly but knowing this is the light at the end of the tunnel makes it allll worth it.

-Advent by Candlelight is this weekend! I'm really excited. It's always a really special night and I can't wait to play hostess. :-)

-Is it cheating to write about snow in both categories? There's something about the first real snowfall that's just exciting.

I guess this post was really all about snow anyway. Sorry. Excuse me while I go make snow angels. :)

Happy Happy Happy

I really like this linkup. Here are your happies and crappies for this week. Enjoy!

The Vintage Modern Wife & Brunch with Amber: Happies and Crappies Link Up

Crappies:
-Tossed my garbage in the dumpster outside of work and suddenly realized I didn't have my keys with me anymore...
-I haven't been to the gym all week. And it feels awful.
-Cough/cold/snot season is starting to creep into my classroom. I don't want it!!
-My nails are so freaking chipped right now, and I have no motivation to repaint them.

Happies:
-When I went inside to get a flashlight, preparing to dumpster-dive for my keys, I saw them on the counter (see: Crappies)
-Getting together with friends on Friday and Saturday night. Let the good times roll.
-I got my newsletter written and next week's lesson plan turned in early. That never happens!
-Half day on a Friday. Hah. Lay. Lew. Yah.

I'd love to hear your lists!

Currently

Currently I am...crocheting like a madwoman. Something about cold weather makes crocheting even more appealing. I'm trying a new hat pattern. I've taken it apart at least thrice. Crocheting in the round gets me every time.

Watching: The Office. I'm not sure how we've watched How I Met Your Mother 80,000 times but have not re-watched The Office. Speaking of HIMYM, is anyone else a little bit bored of this season? I am. I get it, but it's getting kind of old. Anybody else watch Biggest Loser? I was pretty disappointed by the results last week...and I think some of the challenges have been pretty ridiculous. Anyway, The Office is great. Watch it.

Wearing: PJ pants pretty much happen as soon as I walk in the door at night. So there's that. Also the sweater I wore to work, striped socks, and my fuzzy slippers.

Drinking: Right now, water. But I have a new-found obsession with fountain Dr. Pepper. In a foam cup, not plastic. Half ice. Can't stop, won't stop.

Excited for: Advent by Candlelight at our church..I'm hosting a table...should be fun! Also, the holidays. I seriously can't wait for a few days off to spend with our families!

Other news: Jethro caught a mouse this weekend. We were sitting in the living room before church and he trotted in and dropped it in front of us. It took a few minutes to realize it was a real mouse. I didn't freak out as much as I thought I would. That does not mean I'm looking forward to it happening again. Thanks, Jethro.

Gotta Get Down on Friday

It's 9 pm on Friday night and too late to craft a creative title and intro to this post. How was your Friday??

After work Justin and I went out to get my ring inspected and cleaned. I have to take it in twice a year to keep up the warranty. We grabbed some dinner at Red Robin (YUM!) You know you were thinking it too. Then I had some homework to finish up for my class tomorrow...so naturally we went to Target. My homework is done so I'm linking up with Happies and Crappies and I don't care how late I am.
The Vintage Modern Wife & Brunch with Amber: Happies and Crappies Link Up

Crappies Again, don't want to end my post on a crappy note.
-There will be no down time this weekend. I am busy all day, every day. And I just want to lay on the couch.
- My hands are already starting to crack and bleed.
- I have several hours worth of shows to catch up on. And no time to watch them (see above).
- The red devil in my belly
[source]
Happies
-I got new slippers. That sounds a lot lamer than I thought it would. But they are cushy and warm and I get so excited when I see them waiting for me by the door.
- I'm really proud of how much I've worked out this week. Especially with the whole period thing.
-I made these baked chimichangas for dinner last night and they were DELICIOUS!
-Jethro is curled up next to my leg right now and is purring away. Also keeping me warm.

Happy Friday!

Happies and Crappies

Today I've decided to try this link up since it's Friday and I'm procrastinating real life.
The Vintage Modern Wife & Brunch with Amber: Happies and Crappies Link Up
If you aren't familiar with this link up, it's pretty simple; it's just a list of good things and not so good things from the week. Here goes. I'm going to start with crappies so that this post can end on a happy note.

Crappies:
I didn't go to Planet Fitness at all this week. I did zumba and swimming, but it was not a great week for workouts.
It rained the majority of the week. Do you know what it's like to be in charge of a room of 2-3 year olds who can't go outside?! It's crappy.

My hair band snapped when I was trying to put my hair up today.

On another hair-related note, my hair is pretty chlorine fried from swimming.

Happies:
The stars aligned today and my afternoon off landed on Friday. Hello, weekend.

That thing with the voice-over.

I have no plans or commitments this weekend. That sounds sad, but seriously I'm so excited not to have to go or be anywhere for the first time in weeks.

My grandpa who was in the hospital last week got to come home finally!

There's a new Revenge, a new Grey's Anatomy, AND a new Big Bang Theory for me to catch up on. Hold the spoilers, please!

That's all I've got. Enjoy your weekend!

Crazy Random Happenstance

Apparently I found my life's calling. They are putting together a promotional video for the childcare center and church that I work for. Today, with zero notice, they asked me to try reading the voice-over script. And I was all...
[source]
So we went into the conference room and I looked over the script (on his phone because it never got printed..) quickly then started recording.

Movie Guy: "Wow. You really knocked it out of the park. I'm going to have you do it one more time just so I can adjust a mic level. But seriously, you have a gift."

So I read it again.

Movie Guy: "Really awesome. You have the voice for this. You knocked it out of the park." (he said that three or four more times) "Now I want you to read (other person from the church video)'s part and just see how it goes".

So I read the other script.

Movie Guy: "Perfect. We don't even need to run it again. I'm so glad they recommended you for this." and...you guessed it... "You really knocked it out of the park".

And as I'm getting ready to leave..

Movie Guy: "I'm going to leave a card with you. Also, if you're interested I'd love to get in touch with you again about doing some more voice work on another project my company is working on".

So then I was all...
[source]
In other news, my phone stopped working. I've had it too long for it to be covered by warranty but not long enough for me to be eligible for a new phone. So now I've got Justin's old phone reactivated until I can get a new one.

And I joined a gym. Planet Fitness. The first time I went, I ran in to my pastor. #sweaty #awkward  Later on in the week I stepped on a machine that I didn't really know how to use...because I thought it was something different. Did I just step down? Oh, no. Obviously I stayed on and faked it for 5ish minutes and hoped people thought it was my "warm up".

And our church is getting a new grand piano. They are having a concert to showcase it and they asked me to play for it.

And....that's all I've got. It's been an interesting couple of days. One ticket to the weekend, please.
Xo Steph

The Happiest 5k on the Planet

...aside from being out of shape and having to get up before 5 a.m. I did The Color Run yesterday! And yes, I actually ran most of it. Let me tell you about it.

We stayed overnight at Emily's house since she was running too, and it cut down on part of the drive. And we still had to get up before the friggin crack of dawn. Check-in opened at 6 and our handy race guide told us to be there early to avoid lines. How long do you think the line was when we got there? If you said "Zero people", you were right. So we spent all of two point five minutes checking in and were left with plenty of time to stand awkwardly and freeze.
I don't know why it's all stretched and distorted looking.
This is obviously pre-race, since we are still clean and white. And freezing. This is also right before Justin abandoned us and drove off to a warm establishment to drink coffee.

After about 40 minutes of prime people-watching time, they decided it was time for a group warmup. Everyone moseyed(??) their way over to the stage to get their Zumba on. There were 4 instructors on stage and they led the whole massive group in a couple of songs each until we all conga-ed over to the starting area.

There were 7500+ people running/walking so they let us start in waves. Before we started they gave everyone a packet of color to save for the end party. Of course 96.2% of people chose to open theirs and throw it out while they were waiting to start running. I think there were 4 color stations. Each one had about 10 people squeezing a bottle of color powder at everyone, cheering and shouting as we went through.

At the finish line there was a color-covered man waiting about 10 feet out from the finish line trying to high five everyone who came through, and hoards of friendly people with water bottles to pass out. Just beyond the finish line was the stage and a massive dance party. This is why we were supposed to save the color packets. After scarfing down a complimentary granola bar, I pulled my color packet out of safe keeping a.k.a my bra (really..where were they expecting us to hold these things??) and went to find Emily.

There were people on stage throwing out free fanny packs and Color Run socks while the dance was happening, and every few songs they did a "color throw" and everyone in the audience threw their color in the air. It was...insane. From inside I could see everyone throw their arms in the air and then nothing. It was colorful for a hot second and then it turned into a big mushy cloud. Watching the color throw from the back was beautiful and incredible. I wish I had been able to get a picture of it.
This is clearly post-race. That big cloud in the background is color powder.
Look how white my freaking teeth are!! After Justin picked us up we went to Starbucks sporting our color with pride p.s. Chocolate Chai is the greatest thing. Ever. Then I came home to shower. The color came off much easier than I was expecting. My pants, socks, and bra even came clean right away. I haven't washed my shirt or head band yet; I want keep the color and the memories a little while longer. :-)

Aside from a few spots on my skin that are still tinted and tired legs, I feel great today. It was such a fun experience and I'm so glad to have been able to be a part of it. I would will definitely do it again!

It smells like fall in our house. There's a pot of wild rice soup on the stove and there's a delightful Bergamot Woods candle burning on my coffee table. Apparently bergamot oil is found in a citrus fruit called a bergamot orange or something. Whatever. It smells delicious. The air has a nice chill, and thanks to the 100 year old architecture of our home, our living room does too.

I've really been dragging my feet about blogging lately. I've started and restarted this post many times but my life has been so consumed with lesson planning, parent teacher conferences, crocheting. And netflix. Speaking of crocheting, my good friend from school just had a baby and I made her this
http://distilleryimage3.ak.instagram.com/5ec2c5d222c611e39ddd22000aeb0e17_7.jpg
I'm pretty proud of this, and I think it's the coolest thing I've ever made.
But anyway, I'm doing the Color Run with Emily this weekend. I've been training by drinking soda and sitting on the couch so...it's gonna be rough great.  If I'm going to make it through 3.1 miles of being blasted with colors while I try not to pass out, I need some loud pump-it-up music in my ears. This is where you come in. I need your music suggestions.

things i hate myself for doing

This morning I was in the car on the way to work and found myself singing along with the radio. I do this a lot, so that's not the surprising part.

You held me down
But I got up
I'm already brushing off the dust.

Katy. Freaking. Perry. Roar. 99% of the time I change the station the second I hear a Katy Perry song come on. I just can't stand her. I listened to the whole thing. And sang along. And then wanted to punch myself in the face. I hate....hate to admit, but I like this song.

There are a few other things that I hate to admit about myself. Such as:
I peel off nail polish like it's a sport. Why WHY do I do this?! It's so rare that I paint my nails in the first place. Once I do, it takes roughly a day before I start picking at it. The acrylic nails were nice for this because I physically couldn't pick them off. I think that's the real reason I stopped getting them.
I fall asleep on my iPad 5 out of 7 nights of the week. Usually when I go upstairs to bed, I can't fall asleep right away. After 20 minutes or so of reading tweets I fall asleep and my iPad falls on my face. Or I roll on top of it. Or Justin lays on it, which really ticks him off. Can't stop, won't stop.

I let laundry pile up until it's taller than me. By the time I have the motivation or energy to do a load of laundry, my closet is bare. Once I actually do the laundry, I let the clean laundry pile up until it's time to do laundry again. Ok, I don't always hate myself for this one. Only when I'm wearing the last two socks in my drawer that don't match.

I binge watch tv shows.  Steph and I were just talking about this. I start a show and watch non stop until it's over. Then I'm left a wreck trying to find a new show. Trying to find new shows is like trying to make new friends when you're a grownup.

Any bad habits or guilty pleasures you hate to admit??

Thanks to Steph...

Not me, Steph. This Steph. I saw her post this today and I wanted to do it too. So thanks, Steph. :)

My happy place...At home. Either on the couch wrapped up in blankets and crocheting, or at the piano.

Whatever happened to...Predictability?..The milkman, the paper boy, evening t.v..? Sorry. Had to.

So what if...I've been neglecting to workout even though the Color Run is coming up soon. ....this might not go well....
E! needs a reality show about...Nothing. No more reality shows. The ones that already exist are bad enough. Except Honey Boo Boo.
My go-to fast food meal is...either the $5 lunch from DQ (Chicken strips with ranch, please) or the $4 lunch from Subway (6 inch turkey with all veggies except onions and a drink). So, I'm cheap.
You might not know that...when I started my blog I wanted it to be a beauty/fashion blog. Then I realized people who wear yoga pants and no makeup most days are not exactly qualified for such things.
The hottest quarterback in the NFL is...Aaron Rodgers. Ok, no I do not like the Packers. And no, I do not watch football for attractive men. But he really is a good looking man.
If I could...Turn back time...if I could find a way.... This Cher song popped into my head as soon as I read this. But instead of hearing Cher sing it, my mind went to Jack.

My personality is awesome because...because there's no other one just like it! I don't know how to answer this.
Twerking is...stupid. End of story.
I think it's super gross when...people don't wash their hands after going to the bathroom.
Someone needs to tell Miley Cyrus...nothing. No one needs to tell her anything. Leave her alone and let her work out her crazy.

How would you answer??

Raw Chicken and Other Irrational Fears

I've mentioned before that I hate cooking meat. Especially chicken. I love to eat it, but am not a fan of slimy, goopy rawness. The other day on my lunch break I came home to put supper together in the slow cooker; I spent maybe 20 minutes assembling it and the other 40 or so scrubbing every surface of kitchen I came in contact with and washing my hands 900 times. Germs!!!
GERMS

On that note, I thought I'd share a list of other ridiculous things that freak me the eff out.

Popsicle sticks. Yep, really. The feeling of the stick on my tongue and teeth...omigod  (I feel like there's a "that's what she said" in there somewhere). I don't like to touch them, and I don't like to taste them.

The sound of eating carrots and other hard crunchy food. My students have baby carrots for snack a lot. I'm all for healthy snacks and chomping on vegetables, but hearing their tiny teeth gnaw off a piece of carrot sets my teeth on edge.

Public bathrooms. We've already established that I'm a germ-a-phobe. Germ-o-phobe? Never ever will I ever sit my tushy on a public toilet seat. I'll squat my hiney over the seat as a last resort...but I'd rather cross my legs and hold it til I get home, thanks.

Phone calls from unknown numbers. Maybe this is just from watching too many horror movies or Pretty Little Liars. If I don't recognize a phone number, I don't answer it. Someone is obviously hunting me down.

Belly buttons. I just think they are weird, ok?

Now that I've shared some of my crazy with you, tell me what weird things bother you. Let me know I'm not alone in this.

Skirtember-The First Week

I love to wear dresses. But I hardly ever do. I always feel like I will be overdressed, and usually settle on jeans. This week was a lot of fun though; I remixed some of my outfits and wore things from my closet I hadn't worn in a long time.

Many thanks to Justin for being my photographer this week!

Tuesday: Tank top//Target, Sweater//Target, Skirt//Target. (Not pictured are leggings from WalMart.
Wednesday: T-shirt//Walmart, Skirt//Target, Scarf//Charlotte Russe.
I did not wear a skirt on Monday as it was the last day of the long weekend and I spent most of it at home. Oops.

The first picture where I'm actually wearing shoes!
Thursday: Dress//Walmart, Sweater//Target, Belt//Target, Leggings//Walmart
Friday: Dress//Target (I tricked you! I'm wearing that green dress as a skirt. Who knew??), Tank//Kohl's
Sunday: Dress//Hand-me-down. I actually don't know where this came from. A friend gave it me a few years ago. Shoes//Walmart, and the star of the show: Red lipstick//Walgreens.

I skipped the skirt on Saturday because we were painting all day. Sunday I only wore the dress to church and swapped it out for my Lions gear as soon as we got home (sorry, Vikes)

This was also a fun work week. I put a lot more effort into my outfits for work than I usually do, and it was refreshing. Also sad. My usual work clothes consist of yoga pants, t-shirts, jeans or shorts. It was nice to step out of the box and do something different. Also the girls in my class think all dresses are "beautiful" so I got a lot of compliments. :-)

Today I am not wearing a skirt, but I am not giving up the week!

Sunday Social Fall Style

We spent this weekend painting our upstairs bathroom. It was all white and old and not attractive at all. It's not quite done yet, but I think it already looks loads better.
There really isn't a good angle to take a picture in this bathroom. It's oddly shaped and very narrow. At least in this corner you can see both the red and the tan. Today it's time for second coats and touch-ups!

1. What is your favorite fall activity?
I actually really enjoy cooking in the fall, more than any other time of the year. The recipes are so much more fun. Also walking around in the chilly air seeing all of the leaves.

2. Do you follow a football team? If so, which one and why?
I pledge allegiance to the Lions. I am not a football fanatic and do not watch every game that's on, but I do enjoy watching football and being from Michigan (as rough as it might be) the Lions shall be my team.

3. What is something fun about fall in your area?
There is a really nice apple orchard and pumpkin patch near us. We went last year and picked some baking pumpkins, shopped and fed the goats. Apparently they have amazing caramel apples, but the line was ridiculous so we skipped that. Maybe next time. :)

4. What are your favorite fall staple outfits?
Long sleeves, jeans, boots, and scarves.

5. What things are his looking forward to most about this coming fall season?
All of the fall smells. Leaves, crisp air, and of course all of the pumpkin-y goodness.
6. What is your favorite fall holiday? Tradition?
Thanksgiving. I mean, come on. For the last four years we have spent Thanksgiving with Justin's family. Justin and I make all of the pies the day before. The men watch football (except for Justin) and my mother-in-law and I plan for our Black Friday shopping excursion. Now that we're married and have our own place, we spend Friday putting up the Christmas tree and decorating. So much excitement.

Sleepovers and Skirtember

Justin and I decided not to make any big end-of-summer Labor day plans and just enjoy the extra day off.

Friday night we had dinner with some friends who have a new baby, and oh my goodness, she is adorable! Saturday was a beautiful day to not set an alarm and sleep until I couldn't sleep anymore. We decided on a whim that we wanted to repaint the upstairs bathroom, so we picked out some paint colors and started ripping wallpaper border. Of course we ended up with some drywall that had to be replaced and it is turning into a much bigger project than planned. We still haven't gotten to the painting.
Funny Labor Day Ecard: This Labor Day try not to think about how your next holiday isn't until Thanksgiving.

Sunday we had friends over for a cookout and game night and a beverage dispenser full of Old Fashioned's. Since neither of us had anything to do the next morning they stayed overnight. We cooked up a big breakfast complete with mimosas the next morning and had a euchre marathon which Emily and I dominated.

We also did some shopping and enjoyed our first pumpkin spice lattes of the season. I spent most of Monday afternoon at school rearranging and organizing my classroom. It was an awesome weekend, and thanks to our shopping trip I am prepared to face Kristin's Skirtember challenge!!
My shirt matching the wall color is merely a coincidence. This was the best lighting and background.

Bats, Brews, and Broken Shoes

Everyone talks about how hard it is to write an opening for a blog post. They're right. Anyway, here's what's been going on in my life lately.

Last Thursday night I had gone to bed later than usual. I had been sleeping for about three hours when I woke up to Justin turning lights on and saying "I don't want to scare you..." Okay, hold on. If you're waking someone up at 2:30 in the morning, this is not an acceptable way to do it. "...but I think there's a bat in the hallway". I watched for a second, as he thought through his plan of attack. He opened the door, poked his head out, then dove back into the room closing the door behind him. "Yep. There's a bat".

I was certainly not ready to process this at 2:30 a.m. While Justin frantically looked for something to catch or kill the creature, I sat in bed trying to rationalize the situation. "Where did it come from?" "I don't know." "How did it get in here?!?" "I don't know.." "What are you going to do?" "I don't know!!"

My husband is a warrior. He ran through the hallway and down the stairs to get a box to trap it. I hid in the bathroom. He got it outside, came upstairs, and went back to sleep. I'm sorry, what? There was just a bat in here. I'm not sleeping. I did eventually fall back asleep, but not long before my alarm went off. Joy.

Saturday we went to visit Justin's family at their campground and this happened.
I've never been a huge fan of camping. Or dirt, or bugs. But this turned out to be one of the greatest nights I've had in a long time. When we got there, they were just getting ready for a deep-fried food party and were frying everything they could find.

And we played Cornhole. If you've never played this game, you are seriously missing out. Ok, all it is, is bean bag toss onto a board with a hole in it. But apparently it's a huge deal here. There was a tournament and lots of rules. I lost (along with every other game I played), but it was the best Cornhole game of my life.

The highlight, my friends, was that there was a DJ at the clubhouse. We all carted our drinks down there and danced the night away (except for Justin). My dancin' shoes must have gotten quite a workout, because now they are in flip-flop heaven.

There you have my weekend recap. On Tuesday night. I hope you had a fun filled weekend too!

Locked Out

Monday night is Zumba night.

When I got home from work I got ready in record time. I bopped out the door humming the theme song to The Office (this is my new Netflix obsession and I have been watching it in every second of spare time) and locking the door from the inside.

Locking. The door. From the inside.

My purse, water bottle, and weights were in my hand. My keys were not. My car was locked, and I had no way to drive it anyway. After frantically checking all of the doors, I called Justin. My husband never answers his phone. So I called him again. And again. And a few more times.

Here are some things you can do when you're locked outside in your workout clothes:
  • Jumping jacks
  • Laps around the house
  • Crunches
  • Anything you can remember from a Zumba routine
Here's what I did: sit at the patio table and talk to a friend on the phone until Justin got home. You know what I did on the way inside the house? I took a sip from my water bottle, whose lid was not on tightly, and spilled it all over me. Then walking up the steps I dropped my phone, scuffing the sides and sending the battery bouncing down the steps.

Now I'm eating ice cream covered with peanut butter melted in the microwave--if you try to tell me that's not delicious, I will fight you--and watching Jim and Pam get engaged.

Sooooo it's been a great start to the week. I hope your Monday is stellar.

The Weekend of Birthdays and Sunday Social

This weekend was one of the busiest we've had in a while. Friday night we had a birthday bonfire at our house for some friends.

Saturday afternoon I accidentally had a shopping spree at Target and bought a few new articles of clothing. Oops. I only went for a birthday card. Justin's cousin has the cutest baby and we went to celebrate his first birthday!

Today was our church picnic and I was in charge of the kids' games so I was there all day and have a nice hot sunburn to show for it. We both spent tonight doing school work and eating the dinner of champions.
Papa John's pizza, cheesey bread, with ranch dressing. Even busted out the fine china.

I figured Sunday Social was a good way to finish out the weekend even though I'm a little late to the linkup.

Sunday Social
1. What is something you've always wanted to do but are afraid of?
I've always wanted to skydive. If ever given the opportunity though, I'm sure I would chicken out. I'm afraid I would throw up or pass out or something.

2. Where do you see yourself in five years?
I really don't like these kinds of questions. Mostly because I don't know how to answer them. Likely still teaching. God-willing we will have had at least one kid by then.

3. What are you looking forward to before the end of 2013?
Running the Color Run, and seeing my family at Christmas!

4. What are your hopes for your blog?
Of course I hope for my blog to grow. I hope to improve my writing and make some new blog friends.

5. Do you always see yourself living in your current town/city?
No. I like where we live just fine and I know we will be here for a while. But I think if the right call comes along in the future, we will take it.

6. What is your morning routine?
Hit the snooze button as many times as possible.
Shower/get dressed.
Breakfast/read blogs.
Brush teeth, and out the door.

Zumba-piphany and My Beef With Netflix

Tonight I had what was undoubtedly the best workout of my life. It was a zumba-piphany. As inadequate as my hip rolling skills might be, Zumba is one of my favorite workouts. Music just gets me pumped. I can't get in to workout dvd's or classes where I can't hear anything but the leader telling me what to do. When I run by myself I need to have my earbuds in my ears and the music up loud. The woman who leads our Zumba class talks as little as possible during it and cranks the music up.

I'm kind of in love with this jam, thanks to Zumba.

I don't know what it was about tonight, but I jumped higher, lunged deeper, and punched harder. Even after a rigorous hour of shakin' it, I have so much energy. Enough to write a blog post and catch up on my bloglovin' feed! Now I'm parked on the couch watching NCIS with Justin. Which brings me to my next point.

At first I thought getting rid of cable was going to be very difficult. But then we got Netflix, and I was obsessed. No commercials, no getting up to switch dvds, instant queue...it was love at first show.

I watched Revenge in a weekend. I was so excited to finally catch up on Grey's, and am chugging right along re-watching The Office. And then they end. I realize this is no fault of Netflix, but why do I have to wait so long between seasons?? By the time season two of Revenge is available I'll have to watch season one all over again to remember what happened.

You guys. Justin and I just made a deal. He really likes to drink scotch and it's not cheap, so I give him crap about buying it. He said "How about this? Whatever I spend on a bottle of scotch, you can spend at Sephora" Ummmmm....deal.

That's all, folks. I'm going to load up my shopping cart.

Fuzzy Face

I am not a "fur mommy" and I am not going to flood you with pictures (mostly because this is the only one I could get of him being still and not blurry) of my pet, but just look at this boy!
His name is Jethro. On Sunday we went to the humane society just to get some more information and after visiting "Kitty City", we ended up applying to adopt this guy. They told us it would take 3-5 days to process it and they would let us know. It didn't even take 3 hours before they called us back

We were able to pick him up today and aside from hating the car, he's been pretty great. That's my big excitement for today...that, and a new hand soap in the bathroom that smells delicious.

Sunday Social 8-4

It's already time for Sunday Social. Why do weekends go by so quickly? Today we're going to the Humane Society to turn in an adoption application and look at pets. Hopefully in the next few days/weeks we'll have a new pet! Anyway, on to the questions!
Sunday Social

 1. What are 3 items you can't live without on a daily basis (water, food, shelter, and clothes don't count)?
I'm a little ashamed to admit that my computer and phone are in the top two. The third item would be toothpaste. I cannot (nor do I think anyone should) go a day without brushing my teeth.

2. What is your all time favorite book? Why?
The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. It's just a really good book. We read it in 7th grade and I reread it for an adolescent literature class I took in college (and several times in between).
[source]

3. What is something you'd like to accomplish before the end of 2013?
I would really really like to get back to my wedding weight. I'm signing up to do a Color Run soon so hopefully that will light a fire under me!
4. If you could go back and relive any year of your life which year would it be?
I guess it depends. If I'm reliving it to change things, it would be freshman or sophomore year of college. I wasn't very outgoing and I didn't really branch out or try to meet new people. If I'm reliving it because it was awesome, it would be senior year of college. Lots of great things happened that year. :)
5. What do you wish people knew about you without you having to tell them?
That I'm really shy....that I'm not trying to be rude, I'm just really not good at talking to people.
